Every Sunday morning from March through December, the parking lot at the Balboa Fun Zone is filled with a dazzling array of classic cars. Free to the public, the Balboa Classic Car Show attracts regulars and tourists, young and old. Everyone wants to see what the excitement is all about.
One recent bright spring morning, several cars including vintage Corvettes, Mustangs and Woodies, were on display. With the sparkling clean engines and gleaming leather seats, you can see that the owners maintain a superior level of painstaking care and love for these vehicles. One owner proudly displayed his white 1965 Corvette, saying, “she’s almost all original and everything is rebuilt to factory code.” He gets frequent honks on the freeway and just likes to get out there and “show her so people can see her.”
As people mill around, checking things out, you can really get a feel for the knowledge and tradition that goes along with owning these cars. Some cars sport their original price tags, and an old advertisement billed a 1950’s Ford Galante as part of “The Most Beautiful Wedding of the Year.”
It’s an enjoyable way to start your morning if you’re up early or a classic car enthusiast. Grab a coffee, your kids, and even your dog, and hop on the ferry from Balboa Island to the Fun Zone.
The Balboa Island Classic Car Show is open every Sunday morning, March through December, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am in the Fun Zone parking lot on East Balboa Blvd. For more information call 949-887-0236.
